Young Women Aware to Learn Internet SafetyFebruary 8, 2005 - Danville, Illinois 33% of kids do not share what they do or where they go on the Internet with their parents and 40% do not discuss Internet safety with their parents. However, 92% of parents state they have set rules for their kid’s Internet activity, but 34% of kids said their parents have not. (Statistics from a 2004 national study by i-SAFE America, an Internet safety education foundation.) One local group of young women will soon know more about how to stay safe on the Internet. Young Women Aware, a youth development program at Danville High School, North Ridge Middle School, and South View Middle School, will discuss ways to protect yourself and your information on the Internet with Julia Sullivan, Systems Analyst at NexLAN. Stephanie Finney, Coordinator for YWA, feels this is a critical topic for young women to discuss. “The Internet is the window to the world and has become part of popular culture. I would like to see someone find a food item, commercial or even household product that is not associated with www-dot-something.” She continued, “Young women use the Internet daily for correspondence, homework and to curb their curiosity. Our job is to help them realize the dark side as well.” “Many teens know more about computers and technology than their parents,” Sullivan added. “They can only stay safe if they have the tools to do so.” The discussions will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 16th at North Ridge Middle School and on Thursday, February 17th at South View Middle School.
