Summer Slowdown?  Not around here!

Dear ISP Clients:

It's a great time of year, with an early hot summer already in full swing.  I remember when I was younger that this time of year was even more special though - because SCHOOL WAS OUT!

There wasn't an Internet back in the days of my summer breaks, so you might be surprised to learn that summer vacation reflects a sharp increase in Internet traffic during what we consider "weekday work hours" as kids at home surf the net.

Thus, depending on your Internet Service Provider, you may see a decrease in your Internet bandwidth for the next three months.  I say "may" because it really does depend on your Internet Service Provider and the traffic the traffic they carry.

As the sole business-only ISP in the local area, we don't see any spike at all - from the clients all the way up to Chicago were we connect to the Internet OC-192 backbone.

So, unless you regularly surf to kid-oriented sites, then if NexLAN is your ISP then you can expect no performance issues.  If NexLAN isn't your ISP, then I'd be interested hearing how much of an impact this has on your business to see if it makes sense to upgrade your connection.

And, of course we can't have a NexLAN ISP NewsLine without discussing spam.  We all wage a constant battle against it and one of the things that makes it challenging is that spammers fake the address they're sending from.  As you'll see in the first article below, there's a promising proposal to add sender authentication to all e-mails and, in my opinion, it's way past due.  I only hope that it's not linked to the current proposals to add taxes to the process, as detailed in the second article.

Regards,

Promising New Anti-Spam Technique

Preliminary approval has been given to DomainKeys Identified Mail to help cut down on SPAM and junk mail.  DomainKeys helps out by providing message authentication, verification and traceability as a way to help determine if the incoming message is valid.  It works by embedding a digital signature in the header of an outgoing message. Tax-Free E-mail and Internet Shopping May Come to End

Currently in Congress is a proposal to end tax-free e-mail, internet shopping and broadband connections.  State and local government are pushing Congress to gain the ability to impose sales tax on internet shopping and being able to implement a new monthly tax on DSL and other connections.  One senator is even predicting a tax on e-mail.  Click here for full details.

Researchers Break Internet Speed Records

Using standard communication protocols, researchers at the University of Tokyo broke Internet speed records two days in a row.  The researchers sent data at 7.67 gigabits per second over a 20,000 mile path one day and on the next modified the protocols and broke the record again by sending data over the same path at 9.08 gigabits per second.  Click here for full details.
