Microsoft instructions for Daylight Saving Time issue

Dear ISP Clients;

Beginning in 2007, daylight saving time (DST) will be extended in the United States. DST will start on March 11, 2007, which is three weeks earlier than usual, and it will end on November 4, 2007, which is one week later than usual. This results in a new DST period that is four weeks longer than in previous years.

Unless certain updates are applied to your computer, the time zone settings for your computer's system clock may be incorrect during this four-week period. In particular, you must make sure that both your Windows operating system and your calendar programs are updated.

The procedure is different depending on the version of Windows you are running.  We've included instructions for our most popular platform (Windows XP SP2) below, but have also included a link for detailed instructions for other versions.

Don't know what version you're running?  Head to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System.  The General tab will list your current version of Windows.

Regards,

Handling DST - Windows XP SP2 with Outlook 2003

If you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Microsoft can install the necessary updates on to your computer through Automatic Updates to your PC in mid-February. If you're not sure if you have Automatic Updates turned on (we'll bet that you do), you can go to the Windows Update site to install the DST update.

Now you need to update your Outlook Calendar.  Microsoft (and NexLAN) recommend prior to installing any automatic or manual DST updates that you print out your calendar. You may also save your Outlook Calendar as a web page (by selecting “Save as a Web Page…” from the File menu) for the extended DST period (the three weeks between the new and old DST change in March and one week in November). Once you have installed the updates, be sure to double check all appointments that you have scheduled during the extended DST period to ensure they are all correct. If an appointment you have scheduled is incorrect, you may move it manually to update it.

If you use the calendar or set reminders in Outlook 2003, you can use the Time Zone Data Update Tool for Microsoft Office Outlook to help you transition any existing appointment during these weeks. The tool should be used after applying the Windows update.

If you run an older version of Windows or Outlook, or have a handheld device running Windows Mobile or CE, you can use the link from Microsoft's home page, but we prefer the plain-text, non-nonsense version that we received from Microsoft Partner Support (just another of the many benefits of being a Gold Certified Partner!).
